Gonçalo MAR (b. 1974, Lisbon) is one of the most significant artists of his generation. At the age of twelve, he was already drawing the figures of his imagination with chalk on asphalt. During his academic journey, halfway through his Fashion Design degree, he began working as a designer at the MagicToons animation studio. In early 1998, he had his first encounter with graffiti.

Focused on creating a unique and distinctive imaginative world, Gonçalo MAR's work blends elements from the universe of comics and animation with some from Japanese culture or others more associated with street art codes. His central, multicolored characters are shrouded in a surreal aura, depicted in situations that seem to emerge from a dream, imbued with a lyricism unparalleled in this form of artistic expression in Portugal. On the wall of a building, there might be a giant character inviting the viewer to step out of their routine and dream. However, Gonçalo MAR's work is not limited to graffiti or street art. The level of detail, the obsession with drawing, and the richness of his compositions also extend to canvases and dreamlike installations that incorporate wood, cardboard, and cement. On the walls of an art gallery, these become a continuation and extension of his very particular cosmos.
